“Secrets of White Room” by Charles Wong

“My earliest idea for this story came from watching the continuous stream of people running to and from the subway train in an endless rat race day after day to build their lives, with no end in sight. Likewise, the mental struggle mirrors the physical struggle as well, as we become entrapped in our minds, lured by money, opportunity, and the ultimate dream of one day escaping from this vicious system.
Secrets of White Room became the embodiment of these ideas, and combines my fascination with telling meaningful stories and my love for the art of photography. It is also a tribute to mental illness.
With stark, symbolic contrasts laden beneath its ordinary and minimalist presentation, the viewer is invited to embark on a journey with the girl in the photos. Vulnerability, awareness, and awakening are central themes to this series, with every physical object, idea, and colour complimenting the inherent contradictions within. Secrets of White Room is not a new story to anyone, but is instead an inspirational reminder to us all of the light ahead.”
